This underground comedy pairs two well-known actors with uniqu comic timing between them in a story of pursuing dreams amidst harsh realities. Two luckless life-long friends and suddenly unemployed security guards (Tim Robbins and John Cusack) seek to fulfill a lifelong dream try their hand at music-video production. Along the way they encounter the worst the music and television business has to offer, falling victim to a few scams and all the while clinging to their unbeatable optimism. Finally they hit upon an idea to resurrect a long-dead 1960s group, with predictably disastrous results. Blus legends Junior Walker and Sam Moore make appearances, and the soundtrack is a treat, featuring the likes of Bo Diddley and Devo. As a satire of the video age, it’s hit and miss, but enough comic moments exist between the two leads to make Tapeheads an interesting diversion. –Robert Lane

Derivative fluff from 1987, made tolerable by its bawdy exuberance and an appealing performance by Michael J. Fox, who was still enjoying TV stardom and the career momentum he earned by traveling Back to the Future. Here he plays a Kansas farm boy who dreams of scoring big in New York City, but reality turns out to be brutal to his ambition. When his uncle (Richard Jordan) gives him a mail-room job in the high-rise headquarters of a major corporation, Fox occupies an empty office and poses as a young executive, winning the attention of a lovely young colleagu (Helen Slater) and having an affair with his boss’s wife (Margaret Whitton). Sporadically amusing as a yuppie comedy and rather off-putting as a wannabe sex farce, the movie’s still recommendable for its lively cast and a breezy style that almost succeeds in updating the conventions of vintage screwball comedy. Whitton is a standout performer here, so you may wonder why her comedic talent has been underrated, apart from a good role in the first two Major Leagu movies. This may be little more than a big-screen sitcom, but it’s not without its charms. –Jeff Shannon

The director of Chow Yun-fat’s first Hollywood outing, music-video veteran Antoine Fuqua, seems to be trying to sqUze the charismatic Asian superstar into a conventional American action-hero mold, and the results are dispiriting. Fuqua never lets this high-spirited actor smile, fetishizing him as a gunslinging clotheshorse in a series of garish, scenery-smashing battle scenes. As a paid assassin whose former employers turn against him, Chow enlists the help of an illegal documents specialist played, with surprising grit, by Mira Sorvino, and then spends most of the time fending off squads of killers in mirror shades. The movie is art-directed and photographed fit to kill (even the most routine incidents are eye-gougingly colorful) and edited to a hip-hop beat. It’s garishly superficial. The frequnt gunplay duls may keep action fans riveted, but they’ll hate themselves in the morning. –David Chute
Who Am I?
Shot in English and budgeted higher than any of his previous Asian features, Jackie Chan’s last film under his Hong Kong contract is an action-packed globe-trotting adventure shot with the American audience in mind. The spies and secret agent-laden plot is packed with car chases, explosions, gunfire aplenty, and of course Jackie’s own brand of gymnastic martial arts. But the flood of his older films between his hits Rumble in the Bronx and Rush Hour had sated American viewers and Who Am I? wound up being sold directly to cable. It’s our loss, for this mix of goofy slapstick and jaw-dropping action is his most impressive film since Drunken Master II. Playing a special forces agent (named, naturally, Jackie) struck with amnesia and adopted by an African bush tribe following a failed assassination attempt, he embarks on a qust to discover his tru identity while armies of killers pour after him. After an explosive opening, the story gets momentarily bogged down in the kind of mugging humor that leaves most American audiences scratching their heads, but once Jackie kicks into gear the film is a high-speed action flurry that culminates in a furious battle atop a Rotterdam skyscraper. Jackie is at his most charmingly naive (he berates the villains, pleading “Why do you want to destroy when you can make things better?”) and athletically impressive: the marvelous stunts–including a flight down the side of the skyscraper–and fight choreography make Rush Hour look like a Sunday drive. –Sean Axmaker

Don’t be fooled by the title. Rather than 102, there are 4 reasons to like this sequl to the successful live-action remake of Disney’s animated classic. There are the 101 spotted pooches, Glenn Close back in fine form as Crulla De Vil, Oddball–the spotless dalmation pup–and Waddlesworth, a parrot who thinks he’s a rottweiler (and is voiced by Monty Python’s Eric Idle). There are just as many reasons to be disappointed. Like most sequls, the story line is virtually a rewrite of the first, the secondary casting isn’t as interesting, the dialogu merely serves to move the plot along, and the third act substitutes mean-spiritedness for comedy. After a period of rehabilitation, Crulla has returned to her old tricks. Once again, she simply must have a spotted coat and will go to any lengths to get ahold of the 102 dalmatians needed to make one with a hood. She sets her sights on the pups owned by her probation officer, Chloe (Alice Evans), and the owner of a local animal shelter, Kevin (Ioan Gruffudd of Horatio Hornblower). Her servant, Alonso (Tim McInnerny), and flamboyant furrier Monsieur Le Pelt (Gerard Depardieu, in one ridiculous outfit after another) are drafted to aid in her qust. It should come as no surprise that Chloe and Kevin fall in love, Oddball helps to save the day, and Crulla is defeated. Children should enjoy the animal high jinks, but adults are less likely to be enamored by this perfectly competent, but relatively charmless affair. –Kathleen C. Fennessy

The adventures in this second collection of the Super S series (episodes 128 to 166) follow a single pattern.
